Recommended Water AdditivesUpdated 16 hours ago

Using the correct water additives is essential for keeping your cold plunge water clean while protecting your tub and chiller. Arctic Warriors cold plunge systems are designed for chlorine free water care. This guide explains which additives are recommended, which should be avoided, and why proper product selection matters.

1. Use the Arctic Warriors Maintenance Kit (Recommended)

The best and safest option for water care is the Arctic Warriors maintenance kit.

This kit is specifically formulated for cold plunge use and helps

  • maintain clean and clear water
  • control bacteria growth
  • oxidize organic contaminants
  • protect internal components
  • reduce buildup and corrosion

Using the recommended kit ensures compatibility with your tub and chiller and provides consistent results.

2. Approved Alternative: Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide

If you choose not to use the maintenance kit, the only alternative we recommend is food grade hydrogen peroxide.

Food grade hydrogen peroxide

  • supports oxidation of organic material
  • helps reduce cloudiness and odor
  • does not leave harsh chemical residue
  • is safer for cold plunge systems than chlorine

Only use food grade hydrogen peroxide, and follow proper dosing guidelines. Do not exceed recommended amounts.

Our cold plunge units are not designed for chlorine use.

Chlorine may

  • damage seals and fittings
  • cause corrosion to internal components
  • reduce the lifespan of the chiller
  • void responsibility for chemical related damage

If a customer chooses to use chlorine, it is done at their own risk, and Arctic Warriors is not responsible for damage caused by chlorine use.

4. Do Not Use Bromine or Pool Chemicals

Pool and spa chemicals are formulated for warm water systems and are not suitable for cold plunge environments.

Avoid

  • bromine
  • pool shock
  • tablets or floating dispensers
  • spa chemicals not labeled for cold plunge use

These products can cause damage and create unsafe water conditions.

5. Avoid Essential Oils and Fragrances

Do not add oils, fragrances, or aromatherapy products to the water.

These products

  • clog filters
  • coat internal tubing
  • reduce ozone effectiveness
  • cause residue buildup
  • may damage components

Even small amounts can cause long term issues.

6. Avoid Household Cleaners or Sanitizers

Never add household products such as

  • bleach
  • vinegar
  • alcohol
  • detergents
  • disinfectants

These are unsafe for cold plunge systems and can damage both the tub and chiller.

7. Test and Balance Water Regularly

Regardless of the additive used, always monitor water balance.

Check regularly

  • pH levels
  • total alkalinity

Recommended ranges

  • pH: 7.2 to 7.8
  • Total alkalinity: 80 to 120 ppm

Balanced water improves sanitizer effectiveness and protects equipment.

8. Adjust Additives Based on Usage

Water care needs increase when

  • the tub is used frequently
  • multiple users share the tub
  • the tub is outdoors
  • water begins to look cloudy or smell

Heavier use may require more frequent oxidation or dosing.
